Tell us a bit about yourself, who are you and what do you make?
Milly Dent reimagines daily routine through uniquely handcrafted, exclusive ceramic goods. Handmade by Milly using small-scale production methods along with distinctive marbling and geometric pattern work, the result challenges conventional expectations of tableware. Inspired by the natural world, the vessels invariably display a whirlpool of inky blues frozen in the fluidity that they are created. The underlying philosophy is based on the simple ideal of producing work that results in outcomes which are both utilitarian and sculptural.
What inspired you to start making ceramics?
I loved the control I had over the material from the minute I started working with ceramics. As the maker you have control over design, form, making and glazing.
What inspires your designs?
I am inspired by all sorts of things around me! The predicable “natural world” around me, the ocean, waves, plants and rock forms as well as everyday objects.
What materials do you use to create your pieces, and why those?
Porcelain - for its vitrified hardness, whiteness and it’s translucency!
What were you doing before you started making ceramics full time?
Working in a bar and studying.
What would you be doing if you weren’t making beautiful ceramics?
Thought question - I think my other dream career is an underwater wildlife videographer.
What’s your favourite piece at the moment?
My new Kumo cup - designed and developed in Arita, Japan.
What can we expect from you in the future?
New fun porcelain designs!
And, finally, what’s your favourite thing to have for breakfast?
Avo and Vegemite on toast.
